How to Survive the Heat
Ideas on what to do on these days when it's so hot
These days everyone wants to escape the heat, whether at the beach or in the mountains. If we choose the second option, we can consider the Pyrenees to be a climate shelter in its entirety. It is an area at higher altitude and therefore generally has lower temperatures, but it also has a large number of rivers and forest areas that protect us from the Sun and also from the heat.
In addition, we are at the beginning of summer and the rivers flow full of water, inviting you to take a refreshing dip. At these times of the year, it is normal to find high areas such as passes or peaks that still have snow. This snow melts and reaches the rivers, which is why they flow with high flow rates and freezing waters!
We share some suggestions of what you can do to get through these heatwaves better: https://pirineuapeu.cat/activitats/descoberta-de-lestany-de-st-maurici
- Walks through a shady forest, such as the route going from Lake St. Maurici to Prat de Pierró, or the Bosc del Gerdar area. Both inside the Aigüestortes National Park.
- The hike through the Mollera d'Escalarre, where we are surrounded by water and which can be combined with a water activity like rafting, kayaking…
- In summer we usually have clear skies and few clouds at night. A perfect combination to observe the sky and discover a large number of stars and planets. The Pyrenees has several night sky protection areas with Starlight certification.
Nobody likes suffering in the heat, but this also gives us opportunities to discover new areas or do different activities, and mountain areas are probably where the heat can be tolerated best, whether soaking in water or strolling through the forest.
