Vall Fosca, the valley of the lakes
In the north of Pallars Jussà, the Vall Fosca hides some thirty high-mountain lakes, the historic Estany Gento cable car and the southern entrance to Aigüestortes National Park. This is the authentic, quiet Pyrenees: stone villages, hay meadows and routes for every level.
Estany Gento and the cable car
In summer, the cable car built for the hydroelectric works climbs from the Sallente reservoir to Estany Gento (2,100 m) in a few minutes: the most comfortable gateway in the Pyrenees to lake country. From there, routes for every taste among lakes and peaks.
The lakes route
Colomina, Saburó, Mar, Tort, Salado… the head of the valley links glacial lakes one after another, with the Colomina refuge as a base. It is one of the best areas in the Pyrenees to discover the high mountains without the crowds.
Heritage and villages
The Vall Fosca is also living history: the pioneering Cabdella hydroelectric power station, the villages of La Torre de Cabdella, Espui and Cabdella, and a green valley floor perfect for family strolls and autumn colours.
Southern gateway to Aigüestortes
From Estany Gento you enter the southern sector of the national park towards Peguera and the Carros de Foc stages — a spectacular access route far less known than Espot or Boí.

FAQ
When does the Vall Fosca cable car run?
Normally in summer (late June to mid-September). Out of season you hike up the old works trail, a beautiful route in itself. We confirm it when planning your trip.
Is the area suitable for families?
Yes: with the cable car, the loop around Estany Gento or the walk to the first lakes are flat, spectacular outings for children. The valley floor also offers easy strolls.
What is the best season?
June to October for the high-mountain lakes; autumn paints the valley in colour; in winter we offer snowshoe outings depending on conditions.
