Carros de Foc, the hut-to-hut trek
Carros de Foc is the most iconic circular trek in the Catalan Pyrenees: it links the staffed mountain huts of Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park across passes above 2,500 m, glacial lakes and postcard granite scenery. Guided, it becomes an unforgettable — and safe — week in the high mountains.
What is Carros de Foc
A circular route of roughly 55–60 km with over 9,000 m of cumulative elevation gain, linking nine staffed refuges in and around the park. There is no fixed start: you can begin at any hut and walk in either direction.
The stages
The classic plan splits the loop into 5–7 days, sleeping each night in a staffed hut with dinner and breakfast. Days run 4–7 effective hours over high-mountain terrain, crossing emblematic passes such as Contraix or the Ratera pass.
Preparation and difficulty
You should be used to walking several consecutive days with a light pack and be sure-footed on scree. It is not technical in summer, but the average altitude is high and weather changes fast. The guide manages pace, navigation and safety decisions.
When to go
Mid-June to early October, when the huts are open and the passes are free of snow. July and August have the liveliest atmosphere; September offers autumn light and quieter trails.

Do the huts need to be booked in advance?
Yes — in summer the refuges fill up weeks ahead. If you come with us, we take care of it: bookings, half board and all trek logistics.
