Climb Pica d'Estats
Pica d'Estats (3,143 m) is the highest summit in Catalonia and one of the most sought-after climbs in the Pyrenees. The normal route starts in the Vallferrera valley, in Pallars Sobirà, passing high-mountain lakes and the Sotllo pass. With a certified guide, the ascent is safe — and within reach of more people than you might think.
The normal route via Vallferrera
The classic itinerary starts at the La Molinassa car park, climbs the valley to the Vallferrera refuge and continues past the Sotllo and Estats lakes to the Sotllo pass. From there, the final ridge leads to the summit, often linked with Verdaguer and Montcalm. It can be done as one long day or as a two-day trip with a night in the refuge.
How hard is it
It is a demanding climb in terms of elevation gain and distance (about 1,700 m of ascent), but with no technical difficulty in summer when conditions are good. You need good fitness, experience on rocky terrain and, outside the season, snow equipment and skills.
When to climb
The usual snow-free window runs from late June to early October. Early in the season, snow patches can linger at the Sotllo pass. In winter and spring it becomes a serious alpine climb, only for experienced parties with proper gear.

How long does it take to climb Pica d'Estats?
As a single long day, 10–12 hours round trip from La Molinassa. The most recommended option is two days with a night at the Vallferrera refuge, splitting the effort.
Do I need high-mountain experience?
You need good fitness and some hiking background, but no climbing: in summer the normal route is demanding hiking with rocky sections. With a guide, we assess together whether it suits you.
What is the best season?
Late June to early October, when the Sotllo pass is usually free of snow. The rest of the year it is alpine terrain with snow and ice.
Can children climb Pica d'Estats?
It is not a trip for young children due to the elevation gain and length. For families we suggest spectacular alternatives such as the Vallferrera lakes or Sant Maurici.
